Super Monkey Ball has got to have the biggest dropoff in quality I've seen in a series.1 & 2 are classics, the GBA game was way better than it had any right to be (and an impressive technical achievement) and then after that it reached near-shovelware status.Tragic, too. You'd think it'd be hard to fuck it up.Anyway, as for 2 itself, I think the level design in the first game is better, but 2's story mode is great for letting you play it without limited continues and shit, so they're about equal.
This (as well as SMB1) is probably the most deceptively hardcore game ever made. On the surface, it looks like a little kid's game with a ludicrously simple, button-free control setup. How challenging can it possibly be?The game relies heavily on execution and physics manipulation. There's usually a 'recommended' strategy to each level, but you can find new strategies if you're skilled enough to find them, and daring enough to use them. It all boils down to pure player skill without ever feeling cheap, an approach to game design Amusement Vision should be commended for.Personally, I've always preferred SMB1 over 2, as the level design is less reliant on moving objects, switches, etc.
2 has far and away the superior multiplayer though. Probably one of my top 10 games for time invested, thanks to score attacking individual levels.
This is a long shot but anyone here remember klow.net? Before speedrunning became as popular as it is now, score attacking things like Super Monkey Ball and Super Smash Bros HRC/BtT were (relatively) popular, and klow.net was the leaderboard/community for SMB scoresFor SMB2 itself, I always felt that they had used up most of the good standard level ideas in SMB1, and without any new movement mechanics (thank god), there was a high reliance on the reverse/stop/play/fastforward switches, portals, and level with over-complicated moving pieces.
If I were to rank my favourite levels across the original games I think they'd mostly come from SMB1, where there were far more 'pure' levels without gimmicks.Favourite MonkeyThe only way is Baby.

The game can be debug paused with R + Start, which will display 'DEBUG MODE' in the top right corner of the screen. Unpause with just Start. Pressing Z while debug paused will advance the game by one frame.
Pressing L + Start brings up an in-game debug menu. Pressing L + Y closes it. Pressing X + B while debug paused will display a cursor that allows you click on UI elements with X or A and move them around the screen with the Left Stick. Pressing Y + B while debug paused will unlock the camera.
Pressing again will reset it but it won't take affect until the game is unpaused. Unlocking the camera also disables the above cursor.
